The short answer is that it is possible to get by in Germany using just English, since it is widely enough spoken for you to use it in most regions without too many problems. More than half the population speaks English to some extent, with the prevalence in popular tourist areas being even higher, so English is more common in Germany than other European countries.

Recent stats suggest that 37% of Poles have English as a second language. The universal consensus on this is that you will be fine just using English when on holiday in Greece. No one reports any significant problems – if ever you run into someone who can’t speak English, someone close by always will.
